2021 Lexus IS vs. 2021 Audi A4
July 31 2020, Lexus Laval
Lexus makes several upgrades to the very successful Lexus IS lineup for 2020. One of its competitors, the 2021 Audi A4, still has rolled out little information about its future. Following is what we have gathered so far about any comparisons, and the future looks bright for the IS.
The 2021 Lexus IS features more engine capabilities and more power
The IS follows its rich engine legacy and also adds several improvements for the 2021 model year. There are still three engine options to choose from, depending on the grade level.
The IS 300 features rear-wheel drive and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Updates for 2021 include an adaptive transmission that selects the best gear for the driving situation. It senses driver inputs and intelligently responds. The engine delivers 241 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The IS 300 is also available with all-wheel drive, powered by a 3.5-litre six-cylinder that generates 260 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque.
When power is most important, the IS 350 AWD features a 3.5-litre six-cylinder that produces 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.
The Audi A4 offers two engines, a pair of turbocharged four-cylinder units that reach 201 horsepower and 261 hp respectively. It does not include an RWD option for added performance and a more spirited driving experience.
The 2021 Lexus IS upgrades safety
Prior IS models received the Lexus Safety System+, but new for 2021 is the Lexus Safety System+ 2.5. This includes Pre-Collision System (PCS), which features Frontal Collision Warning (FCW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), and Pedestrian Detection and Bicyclist Detection. The camera and radar receive enhancements for 2021.
The LSS+ 2.5 also improves vehicle and pedestrian recognition during left-hand turns. It activates PCS functions such as Emergency Steering Assist when needed and cued by the driver. All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Intelligent High Beams, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) round out standard and available safety technologies on the Lexus IS.
However, the Audi A4 makes it more difficult to access many safety features by making them optional--such as Adaptive Cruise Control.
